Third Generation & a Cousin
The year 1921 marked a significant turning point for Arnold's, as the business welcomed the third generation of the family into its fold. J.E's eldest son, Noel, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, left school at the age of 15 to begin what would become a remarkable 46-year journey with the family enterprise. His entry into the business represented the continuing legacy of the Arnold family's commitment to hard work and excellence.

The arrival of cousin Theodor Harry (known simply as Harry) from Yackandandah two years prior had already set the stage for exciting developments. Harry's presence brought fresh energy and new perspectives to the business, culminating in a significant partnership in January 1921. Together with J.E and W.F, Harry formed a retail partnership under the name Harry Arnold & Co., taking charge of the Olive Street shop's management.
Under Harry's leadership, the Olive Street shops underwent a transformation that would capture the imagination of local shoppers. The business expanded beyond its traditional offering of fruits and vegetables, venturing into confectionery, soft drinks, and ice cream. This diversification reflected the changing tastes of Albury's growing population and the Arnold family's ability to adapt to new market demands.
The shop itself became known for its distinctive layout and memorable displays. Perhaps most striking was the central stand, where hundreds of cauliflowers would be artfully arranged in towering displays alongside other fresh produce, creating an impressive spectacle that drew customers from far and wide. This unique presentation style became a talking point in the community and a testament to Harry's innovative approach to retail presentation.
One of the most characteristic features of the shop was its dedicated orange section, where bins were meticulously organized in ascending size order, from the smallest to the largest fruits. This thoughtful arrangement not only made selection easier for customers but also showcased the Arnold family's attention to detail and commitment to quality presentation.
The partnership between Harry and his cousins proved to be a masterstroke, combining the traditional values instilled by J.G Arnold with modern retail practices. Their collaboration demonstrated how family bonds could strengthen business operations, while their willingness to innovate ensured Arnold's remained at the forefront of Albury's retail landscape.
